What are the benefits of joining a community-based fitness gym?

First and foremost, Crooked Letter CrossFit offers the best value for your money, compared to any other type of gym. The primary reason is that we are locally owned and operated, and the goal of the members of our community-based gym is to provide help, support, and encouragement for each other. You’ll find the environment more welcoming and less intimidating.

Further, you’re getting your workouts programmed and lead by a certified coach and expert on a daily basis. Rather than walking into this gym without a plan, we’ve already written one for you and will lead you through it with the group each day!

At the end of each workout, you’ll receive a unique report card that tracks your progress. We also take snapshots of your workout every day and store them in our system. This is nice because it allows you to compare your progression from week to week so that you know when you’re making gains, and when your body may require some recovery.

A community-based group fitness gym is also better for your health than being at home physically inactive. There are many studies that have shown that individuals who exercise with others and share their thoughts are less lonely and suffer from depression less which has a direct link to physical health.

When it comes to making your lifestyle shift, you’re going to be in a group of people that are on the exact same page as you. You’ll get accountability from other members are also Biloxi locals (who also want and need to make progress!). It’s a fun, social atmosphere where everyone is striving for the same goals!

Finally, another benefit of joining a local community-based group fitness gym is that it will help you stay in shape for anything since you’re getting a variety of new workouts regularly and constantly bettering yourself!

Through our experience of working with thousands of Biloxi locals at Crooked Letter CrossFit over many years now, there are some other benefits too! You’ll find yourself going to the gym more often, you’ll feel better about yourself and your confidence will grow. This all typically leads to weight loss or a healthier lifestyle overall!

Feel free to contact us anytime with questions on how we can help you make a lifestyle shift! I hope this article was helpful in encouraging you to get involved with our group fitness classes.

Cayla Breland

COACH

Cayla Breland grew up in the small town of Stringer, MS.  She grew up competing in dance and cheerleading.  After high school, she continued to cheer at Jones County Junior College, until she decided that her education was a little more important.  She then attended William Carey where she earned her Bachelors and Masters in Math Education.  She is also a wife and mom to her son, Paxton.
Her love for working out started with excessive running.  She then began competing in bodybuilding nationally for 4 years.  She quickly realized this was not the life for her and CrossFit seemed like a much healthier choice for her mentally and physically.  She and her husband joined Crooked Letter in April of 2018 and instantly fell in love with every part of CrossFit.  She found herself coming early and staying late for every class just so she could be a part of the atmosphere and motivating others.  She knew becoming a trainer at Crooked Letter is exactly what she wanted to do.
When Cayla is not at the gym, she spends her time teaching math at St. Martin High School.  She looks forward to helping you become your best self!

Todd Wilson

COACH

Todd Wilson played football at The University of Southern Mississippi and graduated in 2009 with a Bachelors in Exercise Science. After college, he pursued football for a couple years and played one season of Arena Football. He knew about CrossFit after college, but delayed starting because he was focused on getting to the next level in football. Todd says that if he knew then what he knows now, he would have dropped football and got into CrossFit. He started his CrossFit journey in 2013 with Coaches Aaron and Chad at E-Fitness in Biloxi.
He had coached some classes there, but wasn’t certified and knew very little about Olympic Weightlifting. Once E-Fitness closed, and he started a new job at Ingalls Shipbuilding, he began doing CrossFit at home on his own.  In 2015, Coach Aaron asked him to do a competition with him and Chad. Up until that point, Todd just did CrossFit because it was fun and it reminded him of the workouts they would do for football.  After the three won their division in the competition, that’s when he made CrossFit a lifestyle. Todd joined the Crooked Letter family right after that. Todd is now going on his 2nd year of coaching at Crooked Letter. Last year, he started teaching and coaching football at D’Iberville High School. Outside of the gym, Todd spends time with his wife, Stephanie, and kids, Jacee and Rock. He also go to church at Ocean Springs Assembly where he plays the drums and bass on the worship team. Todd enjoys spending time with friends, watching football and the occasional cheat meal!

Kourtney Kuehn

COACH

Kourtney Kuehn was born in Biloxi, Mississippi, but grew up in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, with her twin sister and grandfather. She was a competitive cheerleader throughout middle school and high school where helped her find her love for health and fitness. She moved back to the Biloxi Coast in 2011 and got into the sport of bodybuilding.
After competing in her first bodybuilding show she realized putting on more muscle was key to win the sport. She instantly started Powerlifting to achieve more muscle mass and realized her strength was more exciting to her. She competed in her first Powerlifting Meet at the APA World’s Competition and won first in her weight class and all-around best lifter. For the next 5 years, she competed in 12 Powerlifting Meets and won pound for pound Best Lifter at every meet. After becoming top 3 in her weight class in the world and maintaining all Mississippi state records, she felt she needed a change. She wanted to try out Olympic Lifting and that’s when she ended up at Crooked Letter CrossFit! After 2 years of tough workouts and watching the community blossom, she pursued her CrossFit Level-1 and shortly after her USA Weightlifting Certification. After a year of Coaching, she felt it was time to expand her knowledge for the athlete at Crooked Letter CrossFit and obtained her CrossFit Level-2 Certificate. Being a Property Management Recruiter, CrossFit is her outlet and gives her the strength to work off stress and spend time with the community. When she isn’t busy at work or Coaching, she enjoys spending time with her family, wakeboarding, working out, and playing with her Golden Retriever!

Seth Conn

COACH

Seth Conn was born and raised in Southern California and grew up very active, playing football, wrestling, and track. Once he graduated high school, he decided to join the US Air Force and become a fireman. Seth always envied how firemen conducted themselves, staying physically fit, and always putting others before themselves, so the military was his way in.
Throughout Seth’s first few years in the service, he managed to stay in shape, but a traditional gym routine wasn’t giving him the satisfaction that he needed both physically and mentally.  He knew he needed a change, and that’s when he found CrossFit. A few months after getting stationed in Biloxi, Seth and some friends walked into the old Crooked Letter for the 2018 CrossFit open, and he instantly fell in love with everything about it… the workouts were extremely challenging and the community was awesome. Seth signed up for a membership immediately, and not long after that he knew that getting his Level-1 was something he needed to do! Helping people and motivating them to do better and reach their goals is one of the best feelings in the world and Seth is so thankful to be a part of it!
When he’s not at the fire department or at the gym coaching/working out, Seth enjoys playing his guitar, going to the beach, and most importantly, traveling!

Christy Radich

COACH

Christy Radich has been doing CrossFit for about four years.  She started because she always loved working out and staying fit, but found regular gyms boring and that finding a consistent workout partner was hard. Her husband, Chad, already did CrossFit and loved it, so she started with him.  She loves teaching others, so she decided to obtain her CFL1 certification to help Chad start his CrossFit gym.
Christy has a Bachelor’s in Early Education from the University of Southern Mississippi and is the director of Future Scholars Learning Center, so obtaining her certification for Kids CrossFit was a natural fit. She coaches the Kids Program and assists in coaching the adults when needed.  Christy oversees and operates the business portion for her and Chad’s two learning centers as well as Crooked Letter CrossFit.

Aaron Lamey

Head Coach

Aaron Lamey was born and raised in Biloxi.  Growing up active and athletic, regular boring gym routines did not supplement his lifestyle.  He started CrossFit in 2011 and was hooked instantly to the training methodology, the competitiveness, and the community.  Being faced with a different challenge everyday by the workouts is what kept Aaron doing CrossFit consistently over the last several years.  Always trying to recruit others to come over to the dark side, Aaron was able to talk Coach Chad into trying CrossFit and the rest is history. Since helping Chad start Crooked Letter CrossFit in his garage, Aaron is proud of how far they have come.
